Year 2 History Detectives!

Year 2 students became history detectives recently as they embarked on their first excursion for the year to Wallsend, looking for clues about the past. Simply by using their detective eyes to spot artifacts and then wearing their detective hats as they connected the past to the present, they were able to discover that Wallsend was a coal mining community, that the first mayor was James Fletcher, and that sandstone was a common building material. Year 2 also used their imaginations to think about what Toohrnbing (Ironbark Creek) must have been like before European settlers came to our area – a creek full of shellfish and crabs and oysters. So different from the drain that it looks like today.
