Playing Cards For Science

The Year 7 Science students have been learning about ecosystems in a different way – Game Based Learning. By playing the Phylo Trading Card Game the students have been building food chains, creating biodiverse, stable ecosystems and sabotaging opponents’ ecosystems with environmental and human events such as climate change, wildfires and oil spills.

Students enjoyed learning the game and playing each other, with 90% of students indicating that they believed it helped improve their understanding of food chains and food webs.

The students have now made their own “deck” of Phylo cards. Students chose Australian organisms and researched major features, inserting this information into a template. The deck information that the students have collected will be submitted to the Phylo Card Game website and could be selected for professional production.
