Fundraiser Supporting the Nepal Earthquake Relief

On April 25 at 11:56am local time, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck Nepal. With its epicentre approximately 80 km to the Northwest of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, it killed over 8,800 people and injured almost 23,000 others. It was the worst natural disaster to strike Nepal since 1934.

The earthquake also triggered an avalanche on Mount Everest, killing at least 19 people, making it the deadliest day on the mountain to date.

Geophysicists and other experts had warned for decades that Nepal was vulnerable to a deadly earthquake. However, with at least one quarter of the population living below the poverty line it was almost impossible for residents to prepare for such a disaster.

Entire villages were flattened and hundreds and thousands of people were made homeless.

Moved by the overwhelming devastation in Nepal, Macquarie College wanted to help in some way and so the Senior School Student Council met and decided to organise a milkshake day in order to raise funds for the relief effort.

Students and teachers came together to pitch in for a day of organised chaos! Students pre-ordered their milkshakes to make the process more efficient, but that didn’t stop a mad rush at lunchtime of staff and students alike who lined up to order their choice of thick shakes, soy shakes, almond shakes or cow milk shakes!

The support and participation from staff and students was monumental. The SRC would like to thank all those involved and are very pleased to announce that they raised over $850 which will go to the ADRA Nepal Earthquake relief efforts.
